A Tour of Sicily in the Spring of 1998

Touring Sicily in our Four Winds American motorhome, we met and travelled with Americans Dick, Audrey and their friend Sally, travelling in their GB-registered German Hymer motorhome. In those days we also carried with us a 100cc Yamaha motorbike bought in Greece.

We first met in Syracuse in the east of the island and parted company in Palermo in the west. The focus of the joint tour was a shared interest in the temples and many other sites of the Ancient Greeks, walking, talking and enjoying Dick's splendid cooking!

Our Four Winds covered 560 miles in 45 days, staying in 10 places: Taormina, Syracuse, Ragusa Marina, Enna, Agrigento, Eraclea Minea, Selinute, Scopello, Palermo and then Palermo Dock.

We left our new American friends behind as we took the ferry north to Sardinia and on to Corsica, but we were to meet this dynamic trio again in 2002 at their homes in San Rafael, Marin County, just north of San Francisco.

Links to Margaret's full day-by-day written account of the tour of Sicily are given below the following 20 pictures taken at the time.
The full day-by-day account of the motorhome (and motorbike) tour of Sicily is given in Margaret's detailed travel logs:

March 1998
On 18 March, we cross the Straits of Messina past the whirlpool of Charybdis from Reggio di Calabria on the Heel of Italy to Messina on the coast of Sicily.

‘Capo Spartivento’ (translated as ‘Cape Windy Strip’) is the south-eastern extremity of the ‘Toe’ of Italy, in Calabria, extending into the Ionian Sea.
