Madzharovo

May 2023

In a remote corner of south-eastern Bulgaria in the Rhodope mountains forming the border with Greece, Madzharovo lies within a former volcano bisected by the River Arda. Now a nature reserve with three species of vulture, the surrounding countryside was once a centre of resistance to the Turkish occupation, leading to freedom in 1908.

We have cycled in this area, staying on three occasions (most recently in May 2023) at the town's only hotel, the Rai (or 'Paradise'), a wonderful living remnant of many years hidden behind the Iron Curtain!
