The Batavia Sails Again

The life-size replica of the Batavia is moored near where we camped in the Dutch city of Lelystad, with an associated museum. But what they are remembering and celebrating only they would know. It's like have a rebuilt Bounty moored in Portsmouth!

The story of the Batavia is one of the most brutal and harrowing episodes in maritime history. It begins in 1628 when the Batavia (flagship of the Dutch East India Company) set sail for the Indies. It was shipwrecked on its maiden voyage when it struck a coral reef in the Houtman Abrolhos islands off Western Australia. A horrific mutiny broke out, resulting in the murder of over 100 people.

It was named Batavia after the main city in the Dutch colony, and was later renamed Jakarta which is now the capital of Indonesia. For more, continue reading Wikipedia or something like it!
